Ruotsalaisen kansankodin taustoilla. Tulkintaa ruotsalaisesta 1800-luvun nationalismista

From the rhetoric of the nation to the Swedish folkhem ideology

Swedish self-image of collective identity is usually based on such concepts as the welfare state and the folkhem, not on the concept of the nation. This is possibly why Swedish nationalism is hardly ever discussed in Sweden. The article presents some interpretations of 19th century Swedish nationalism. My analysis of the rhetoric of "patriotism" and "nation" in the debates on the parliamentary reform of 1866 shows that national liberal discourse in the 1860's contained elements that can be found, though in a transformed form, in the discourse on the folkhem in the 1930's.
