The Intertwinement of the Concept of Responsibility and the Problem of Free Will

In this essay the close connection between the concept of responsibility and the metaphysical problem of free will is examined in historical perspective. It will be shown that the abstract concept of responsibility – which unifies the practices of praise and blame – and the problem of free will are excplicated for the first time at different times in history. Accordingly it is suggested that the connection of responsibility and free will problem should be treated as two separate – allthough tightly entangled – questions rather than two sides of the same question.
