Folk Psychological Rationalization and Social Sciences

This article discusses Georg Henrik von Wright's Explanation and Understanding from the point of view of the philosophy of social science. Von Wright's model of practical reasoning is based on folk psychological rationalization. Although von Wright's model is not in wide use anymore, its problems are still relevant. Folk psychological rationalization provides a systematically biased account of human cognition. Furthermore, von Wright's attempt to defend the autonomy of intentional explanation leads to an account that misses many important social scientific research themes. For these reason, folk psychological rationalization is better seen as an interesting topic for empirical study rather than a foundation for the social sciences.
