Rajalla laboratoriossa: iän arviointia, iän määrittämistä ja ikämääräyksiä

In the pursuit of exact information: Age determination of young asylum seekers in Finland

This article discusses the procedures of age assessment of unaccompanied young asylum seekers by paying close attention to the dynamics of uncertainty and proof. It shows how the age assessment – based on the medical examination in the laboratory or on impressions – is transformed into age determination by the Finnish Immigration Service with significant consequences for the youth. It also shows how the approximations of the age are contested. Age assessment is juxtaposed with the use of another biotechnological method, DNA testing for family reunification.
